About the kennel

Lakedown Labradors, a small non-commercial kennel, is run by myself, Roger Phillips.  With never more than six dogs at any one time, I pride myself on quality rather than quantity.  I typically breed one litter a year, taking one puppy for myself and with the rest of the litter going to other approved trialling homes.  All of my the dogs are hip and eye tested and are clear of CNM and PRA.  My kennel prefix is LAKEDOWN.

I have been training labrador retrievers for just over 22 years and in this time have been successful in making up three Field Trial Champions:  FTCH Monty of the Lake; FTCH Lakedown Sedge; and FTCH Connemara Twinkle of Lakedown.

Achievements

  • Qualified for the IGL Championships twice with FTCH Lakedown Sedge and FTCH Connemara Twinkle of Lakedown.
  • First Welsh handler to win the Top International Dog and Handler Award at the CLA Game Fair in Scotland in 1991, with a bitch called Lakedown Lillibutt.
  • Represented the Welsh International Gundog Team numerous times at the CLA Game Fair and also at the Skinners World Cup at Sherbourne Castle and Highclere Castle.
  • Member of the 2009's victorious Welsh International Retriever Team to win the Skinners Retriever World Cup at Highclere Castle; Wales also being the country to win the event three times.
  • Qualified for the CLA Team for the last three years (2007, 2008, 2009) with FTCH Connemara Twinkle of Lakedown but unfortunately have had to withdraw on all occasions because of her coming in to season.

Judging
Experience

I have travelled to many parts of Europe to take training seminars and judge field trials and international tests, and have been an A-panel retriever judge with the Kennel Club for approximately ten years.

In 2004 when the CLA Game Fair was held at Blenheim Palace, myself and Mike Tallamy were the international retriever judges.  I have also judged the Skinners World International Retriever event at Sherbourne Castle. I have in the past also been nominated to judge the IGL Retriever Championship and judged at the Belgium Retriever Championship.

2009 has been a busy year, having judged the Himmel Cup in Switzerland, the International Working Test (IWT) in Holland, a working test in Nuremberg, an international field trial in Hanover, Germany and delivering a training seminar in Sweden.

Breeding

I have exported pups and working retrievers to many parts of Europe and Scandinavia, the most successful being FTW Bierspool Black Bill of Lakedown (Will) who was sold as a Field Trial Winner to Birgitta Stafalund in Sweden.  Will has since been made up to Swedish and Danish Field Trial Champions and was also second in the Danish Championship in 2008, and fourth in 2009.
